A Second Life for a Well-Travelled Set of Jimny Handles

These Jimny grab handles first left the workshop in 2020.

They were part of the very first design iteration. Simple, clean, and without the edge stitching detail that later became standard.

After a few years of use, and more than a few miles out there, the owner got in touch to ask if it would be possible to add the stitched edge detail to bring them closer to the current design.

The handles were sent back to the workshop from a customer in Chile.

What Was Done

Once back on the bench, the first step was a full clean using saddle soap. This lifted surface dirt and old residue while keeping the leather’s natural patina intact.

After drying, the leather was conditioned to reintroduce oils lost through use and climate changes. The goal here wasn’t to make them look new, but to bring back flexibility and depth while respecting the marks and wear already earned.

The edge stitching was then added by hand, carefully following the original shape so the update felt natural rather than imposed.

To finish, the handles were weather-proofed with a natural dubbin, and the edges were re-burnished and treated to seal everything in.

The Result

The leather kept its colour, creases, and character but gained structure, protection, and many more years of use.

This kind of work sits at the heart of Out There Aftercare. It’s not about erasing history or chasing perfection. It’s about maintaining function, strengthening what’s already there, and keeping well-used gear in service.

Why This Matters

Handcrafted leather should age. It should pick up marks, patina where it’s held most, and reflect the places it’s been.

When something is made properly, it shouldn’t be disposable.

That’s why Aftercare exists. Not as an upsell, but as a continuation of the same thinking that goes into making each piece in the first place.

If we made it, we’ll help keep it going.
